Choosing your wedding photographer can be hard enough. There are so many things to consider and style is a big part of it! Have you ever looked at a photo and thought, “I love this?” Well, there is a reason for that! Photographers have all different types of styles that make their work unique to them. Usually, people notice editing styles first. However, there are so many other variables that make a photo what it is. I will help you figure out what some of those factors are and how you can use them to choose your ideal photographer.
Something that most people pick up on first is the style a photographer has. Two of the big styles that people notice are “bright and airy” and “dark and moody.” However, there are so many styles in between that you can choose from! For instance, the CSPhotography style is fine art which means that my editing and shooting style is lighter and softer. This is slightly different from the bright and airy photographer, though they can be similar. Fine art photographers want their style to reflect that of their name, fine art. This means that they print very nicely because they are not using a lot of dark ink. In the opposite direction, is the more moody style. These can vary on shades of warmth and contrast. I recommend looking at the whites and neutrals of a photographer’s work to evaluate their editing style.
Undoubtedly, posing is an element of style that many people do not realize that this differs between photographers. On one hand, some photographers have a very structured posing style. On the other hand, other photographers go very candid. There are styles in between and outside of those examples. A lot of the time, these styles correlate with the editing style as well. Bright and airy/ light and airy tend to lean towards guided posing, while more moody photographers tend to be more prompted. There are perks to both and each style can work better for some and not for others. Both produce beautiful portraits, you just have to decide what look you are going for.
Finally, wedding day details are something that changes with each photographer. It is important to think about this because a lot of times a bride will fall in love with a gorgeous flat lay of details that they see on Pinterest but do not know how they can make this happen on their wedding day. This is when your choice of style comes in. Most of the time those flat lays are the work of a light and airy/ fine art/ film photographer. The photographers with this style focus on capturing those details of your day in a way that appears editorial and beautiful. They typically bring a kit of items to create a piece of art with your details. Moody photographers also photograph details, but they typically focus on capturing it in a photo journalistic way, meaning that it reflects how your details look during your wedding day.
There is no right or wrong type of photography. Both are beautiful and both have their perks. However, they are different and it is so important to know what you like so you can get photos you love! Are you looking for a photographer for your wedding day and you love my style? Let’s chat!
